Leaders within the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) value chain have joined forces to launch a campaign focused on showcasing the considerable sustainability benefits of PET packaging material. Simultaneously, they aim to foster awareness about the critical importance of recycling. This collaborative effort involves a partnership with Public Television’s program “Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid” and a series of national cable television commercials.
Laura Stewart, the Executive Director of the National Association for PET Container Resources, emphasizes the urgency of dispelling misconceptions about PET packaging and highlighting its environmental merits. Stewart underlines that this initiative provides an exceptional opportunity to deliver a well-founded message to a wide audience, addressing factual information that has been obscured by misinformation. Verified by lifecycle assessments, including one by McKinsey & Company, the true positive impact of PET as an eco-responsible packaging solution is unveiled. This impact encompasses a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, smog, and acid rain compared to alternative primary beverage packaging materials.
A concise five-minute video presentation that imparts factual insights about PET containers and emphasizes recycling’s significance will be accessible through over 175 public television stations nationwide, commencing on August 14. The segment will be continuously broadcasted for a year, ensuring broad awareness about the benefits of PET and proper recycling practices. Furthermore, a 60-second commercial is scheduled to run nationally on FOX Business during prime time on August 24th and 27th. This commercial will be shown 400 times across the top 100 media markets in the United States by the end of August.
The comprehensive video can be viewed online, and this endeavor is partnered with “Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid” to educate and inspire informed consumer decisions. The narrative of the PET bottle’s circularity journey—from design and manufacturing to consumer use and recycling—aims to play a pivotal role in both the industry and the planet’s health. Highlighting PET’s multifaceted role in preserving and transporting goods, securing medicine deliveries, and being fully recyclable from 100 percent recycled material, the video underscores the evident facts.
Sally Houghton, Executive Director of the Plastic Recycling Corporation of California, reinforces the importance of recycling for a sustainable world, stressing that when society recycles, everyone benefits. This sentiment underscores the core message of the campaign, reflecting the pivotal role recycling plays in creating a more environmentally conscious world.
