Secto Design, a specialist in modern hand-made design lamps, is transitioning its Petite product line’s packaging from fossil-based materials to recyclable and circular packaging developed by Paptic and Woamy.

The lighting’s plastic hoods will be replaced with renewable and recyclable Paptic material, while the plastic foams protecting metal parts during transportation will be substituted with fully bio-based, biodegradable and recyclable wood foam produced by Woamy.

Joakim Jusélius, part owner and board member of Secto Design, expresses his satisfaction with the packaging overhaul, stating, “I’m very pleased with these developments in our packaging. This is another tangible step in our ambitious sustainability efforts to act per our values.”

“It is wonderful to work with the bright folks from Woamy and Paptic: To do good together, and a pleasure to be involved at an early stage in these cutting-edge innovations. We must all do what we can for the planet and act. I hope our work here can help others find ways to act, too.”

The recyclable at-scale Paptic materials are developed to replace plastics in flexible packaging. Made of renewable wood-fiber-based materials, Paptic is also FSC-certified. Meanwhile, Woamy is a spinout from Finland’s Aalto University that creates a novel ecological cellulose-based biofoam mimicking the directional strength of wood.

The new bio-based and recyclable packaging, a result of the three companies’ collaborative effort, is set to hit the market at the beginning of February 2024.packaging for lights and lamps

Principles of circular economy
Susanna Partanen, CEO & co-founder of Woamy, highlights the company’s successful cooperation among the three parties and the first packaging foam product launch to the market.

“This is a very exciting moment for Woamy to launch our first packaging foam product. This product is a perfect example of protecting delicate surfaces and ensuring plastic-free and circular packaging with our biodegradable and recyclable biofoam.”

“It has been a joy to work with Secto Design as they are a customer who truly cares about sustainability and is ready to invest time and effort to make those values reflect in actions. And through this project, together with Secto Design and Paptic, we highlight how important it is to collaborate to achieve sustainable change,” comments Partanen.

Furthermore, Esa Torniainen, chief strategy officer and co-founder at Paptic, underscores the significance of Secto Design’s choice: “We were excited to join forces with Secto Design and Woamy to transform the packaging standards of the lighting industry in a more sustainable direction. When Secto Design, a company with a strong sustainability agenda, chooses Paptic material for its packaging, it proves that our materials meet their high functionality and sustainability requirements.”

“Our materials’ unique qualities, such as flexibility and softness, perform exceptionally well in this packaging, where a non-scratch surface is also essential.”
