Protective packaging manufacturer Pregis has collaborated with consumer goods company Henkel to accelerate the development of protective packaging for improved circularity and enhanced recycling.

Both companies are focusing on the development of sustainable protective packaging solutions to achieve environmental goals and address future packaging requirements.

The partnership has developed recently rebranded Pregis EverTec lightweight and recyclable paper cushioned mailer to meet the growing e-commerce packaging requirements.

The mailer has been produced using EPIX technology from Henkel Adhesive Technologies.

Henkel’s EPIX technology holds the potential to enhance product functionality, as well as improve performance while maintaining sustainability and recyclability.

The EverTec mailer is a lightweight and durable package, which can minimise material waste, reduce dependence on corrugated boxes and improve distribution efficiency.

Pregis has opened several new manufacturing sites in the US this year to meet market demand.

Henkel packaging solutions global head Tilo Quink said: “Seeing the rise in demand for e-commerce shipments, Henkel embarked on the development of a technology that would offer advanced functional and sustainable properties for paper.

“With a focus on recovery and reuse of cellulose-based protective packaging, our EPIX technology has become a critical component of the Pregis EverTec mailer.”

Both companies are said to share a commitment to sustainability, which is a part of their operational and organisational philosophies as well as product innovation strategies.

Pregis and Henkel became signatories to the Climate Pledge with an aim of achieving net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

Pregis chief innovation officer Tom Wetsch said: “Because we work with brand owners and retailers every day, we know that they are looking for improved sustainable alternatives to ship their products through the parcel network direct to consumers.

“Listening closely to their needs, Pregis and Henkel have teamed up to bring advanced packaging technologies to the market in a way that no one else can.”
