Siegwerk unveils new paper coatings for circular packaging

Siegwerk, a leading global provider of printing inks and coatings, is set to introduce a range of innovative paper coatings at the Specialty Papers Europe 2024 event.

The new coatings are designed to enhance the barrier and heat-seal properties of paper packaging while maintaining recyclability.

The growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions in the sector has spurred the development of functional paper coatings.

These coatings provide essential properties such as water and grease resistance and heat sealability, previously reliant on plastic laminates.

Siegwerk said its new CIRKIT range offers water-based coatings that can be applied in standard paper mill processes.

“More and more brand owners and manufacturers are turning to renewable and recyclable materials to sustainably pack their products, especially resulting in a growing demand for paper packaging,” said Oliver Waddington, head of Business Development and Circular Economy Coatings at Siegwerk.

“This comes with the challenge of functionalising fibre-based materials like paper in such a way that the barrier and process requirements of the respective packaging application are met, while ensuring smooth disposal in the waste paper recycling process.”

Siegwerk’s new coatings include:

CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1420 and CIRKIT BAR SEAL CT 1422: Multifunctional coatings providing barrier and heat-seal properties without plastic lamination.

CIRKIT BAR CT 2513: Offers strong barrier properties against grease and oil, with high heat resistance.

CIRKIT NATUBAR CT 4326: A nature-based coating with barrier properties that complies with the Single-Use Plastics Directive.

These coatings form part of Siegwerk’s broader commitment to sustainable packaging.

The company has successfully collaborated with partners on various projects, including the development of fibre-based packaging with Packiro and in-line printed paper pouches.

Siegwerk will showcase these new paper coatings and discuss industry trends at this year’s Specialty Papers Europe, held in Vienna, Austria, on 3-4 September.
