Mondi and the UN World Food Programme Strengthen Partnership to Reduce Food Loss Through Sustainable Packaging
Mondi Group, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has announced a three-year extension of its partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the largest humanitarian organisation providing food assistance to those recovering from conflict, natural disasters, and the effects of climate change.
This renewed collaboration builds on the success of previous efforts where Mondi’s technical expertise, R&D infrastructure, and financial contributions helped WFP improve and optimise packaging solutions, ensuring durability during transport, storage, and handling in crisis-affected regions.
A Focus on Sustainability and Innovation
From 2024 to 2027, the partnership seeks to introduce sustainable alternatives to existing packaging materials, focusing on:
- Supporting WFP food manufacturers in using sustainable fibre – both virgin and recycled.
- Optimising material use to create more efficient and durable packaging.
- Enhancing the overall quality of packaging to better withstand challenging conditions in emergency regions.
These efforts will not only support the fight against hunger but also contribute to global efforts to reduce food loss and waste. With one-fifth of food produced for human consumption lost or wasted annually, finding sustainable solutions for food packaging is essential.
